Singapore Day was rocking!!
We started off the day late, and encountered the first national past time: queueing!! The queue was so long, we had to endeavour in the top national vice: cutting into line!! In Singapore, its a very delicate process. First, you have to establish to outsiders that you’re friends with someone already in line. Then, you start chatting enthusiastically until you eventually “merge” into it. This way, the people at the back can’t complain. And Singaporeans usually don’t complain anyway. Yeah!! I’m glad Bayle came much earlier and was already there. It happened that Erwin and Cat had friends somewhere in the vicinity as well, so it was a rather large group of us moving together in the end. And that sort of begins my reasons for loving Singapore Day:
1.) I got to see so many friends!! Expecially my jc classmates. Its so weird that I get to see them in NYC instead of in SG. So sad that I didn’t take any photos with Luke or Andre yesterday. Then there were the USP people like Ronald and Shamantha, Erwin’s friend from Penn, and a bunch of people related to all these people.
2.) Food! Free food!Free Singaporean food! Alright, the portions were kinda small, and I really wouldn’t mind actually paying for larger portions. Maybe they could have a Singapore week next time, so I can go to Central Park everyday to eat a different thing for my meals. Still, it was great to have Singapore food here in NYC. Take a look here to see what was on the menu. I especially loved the chicken rice and the teh. As usual though, the queues were LONG. Luckily, there was enough of a network for us to queue up efficiently (refer to above on top national vice)
3.) Singlish in NYC!! The Americans must have been trying to figure out what Singaporeans speak when they’re together, especially with all the dialects and lehs and lars and mehs being strewn out during the performances and in conversations. And even in the musicals. So er….what are you guys speaking? Er….Singlish! And everyone could understand each other for some reason. Alright, I don’t really understand Hokkien, but the rest is pretty ok.
4.) The entertainment!! Those guys were good!! Especially Hossan Leong and Kit Chan. I’m glad they came and put up such wonderful performances.
If taste good then is food. If dun taste good – then is medicine.
Yes I’m bilingual. English – and Singlish!
Me like Hossan Leong now. He good. He funny. He Singaporean. Ha.
5.) Mambo!! K lar I don’t club, but I liked the music that night anyway, even though I was just sitting there. Got suckered into buying a $5 bottle of water though. I was too thirsty. Easy to get suckered when you don’t go to clubs often.
I’m sure there were more things, but I’m in a rush right now. Oh. I think the articles on Singapore Day are gonna appear on Monday’s Straits Times. Read it to find out more! Cat, Erwin and I had a photo taken. Maybe we’ll be in the news! Ha.
